Things I found...
1)The President of South Africa believes that HIV does not cause AIDs. 2)Diflucan is a drug which prevents men and woman who are HIV posative from getting AIDs. 3)Diflucan costs $2,500 per bottle. 4)95% of HIV posative men and woman live in South Africa, the other 5% are from all over the world. 5)There is a six month window of time where you could be HIV posative, but unaware of it because it does not show on the test.
-2,000 people get HIV a day - It is believed that 7 million people will die by 2010 - 95% of the people with HIV live in South Africa - Men had to leave for 11 months to work in the mines brought HIV back home with them becuase they got lonely working. - Drugs are very expensive, $2,500 per bottle, so very few people are treated
5 things i learned form the movie: -It is predicted that 7,000,000 Africans will die by 2010 from AIDS. -Economy is dependent on mining and for supporting the families in certain areas. -Difflucan is 15x the price of the generic version -Pzizer ended up donating 2 years of diflucan to the people of South Africa. -95% of people in the world w/HIV Live in South Africa. EXTRA CREDIT: yes i would recommend this documentary to other people, beacuse it was differnt from the typical documentary in the sense that it kept your attention, gave you valid facts, and delivered a messege that needs to be spread.
Things i never knew: 1. The president of a country full of suffering wont listen to his people. interesting. 2. No wonder there isn't a "cure". the only way to live is by paying $2,500 per bottle for a treatment. 3. There are 2,000 people a day dieing of this epidemic. Yet no one "knows what to do". 4. There are some amazing people. Like ones who travel three hours just to help a family in dire need. 5. I wasn't aware of the wonderful houses in South Africa. I also wasn't aware that these houses were built by the white comunity.
1. The president of Africa does not think that HIV/AIDS should be dealt with. 2. Diflucan is a major drug that is used to treat HIV/AIDS but no one in Africa has the money to get it. 3. in the year 2000, 2000 people were infected with HIV a day. 4. if a mother has HIV then it is a 50 percent chance the child will have it. 5. AZT is a treatment that mothers use to save there unborn baby from HIV.
As the global population increases, so does the potential for disease.
What's the deal with this blog?
This blog is designed specifically for the spring term theme (of, you guessed it) "Global Problems, Local Solutions" for Ms. Saxe's general biology classes at New Hampton School. This year we are going to focus on turning the phrase "human impact on the environment" from a negative phrase to a positive phrase. Before we do that, we need to learn the basics about ecology and sustainability.
This blog is designed to keep students, tutors and parents informed as to what is going on in class. Students should check this daily for announcements, resources, homework and links to class projects. Homework may be posted here outside of class. But, to be fair, homework that is due the next day will only be posted before 5pm the day before it is due.
If you'd like to see what we did in the fall or winter term check out the blog Biology @ New Hampton
